As with other editions of the 8-bit handheld game system, this Pokemon Game Boy Color's 160 by 144 pixel screen can display any 56-color combination from its palette of 32,768 colors in total, providing an experience reminiscent of a souped-up version of Nintendo's 1985 NES. Players control this Gameboy device using a D-pad, A and B buttons, and Start and Select buttons. A convex bump on the lower back of the device serves as an extra bit of space for AA batteries and a bit of an ergonomic upgrade over the previous Gameboy model, the Pocket. The game screen lacks back- and front-lighting and is designed for visibility in direct sunlight rather than being limited to indoor use.
